Sygnum: Bridging Traditional Finance and Crypto

Sygnum, is a digital asset banking group focused on institutional needs and bringing trust to the ecosystem. Launched in 2017, Sygnum is a licensed bank in Switzerland and fully regulated in Luxembourg, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore.

Sygnum's Comprehensive Approach to Digital Assets

  • Sygnum offers a wide range of services, including custody, trading, staking, stablecoins, asset management and tokenization, all on a single platform.

  • This comprehensive approach caters to the diverse needs of institutional investors and provides an efficient and seamless way to manage digital assets.

  • The company focuses on stable financial centers with clear regulatory frameworks, opting to avoid the regulatory uncertainties of the US market.

Sygnum Bridges the Gap Between Traditional Finance and Crypto

  • The infrastructure differences between traditional finance and crypto remain a challenge. Sygnum is addressing this gap by providing various services like custody, trading, and bank-to-bank services to over 20 banks in Switzerland, enabling over a third of the Swiss population to conveniently trade crypto through Sygnum-linked apps.

  • Sygnum's white-label solutions allow banks to offer crypto services such as custody, trading, and crypto AML to their clients seamlessly, without requiring complex technical infrastructure.

Sygnum Prioritizes Trust and Risk Management

  • The collapse of FTX highlighted the importance of counterparty risk management. Sygnum addresses this concern through an off-balance sheet custody model that ensures client assets are protected even in the event of bankruptcy.

  • Sygnum's Trade Collateral Management product allows clients to deposit funds with Sygnum while maintaining virtual reserves for trading in less regulated markets, mitigating counterparty risk and increasing liquidity with yield-generating opportunities on reserves.

A Holistic View of the Crypto Asset Universe

  • Sygnum advises clients to view digital assets as a diverse investment universe with various components, such as investments in blockchain infrastructure (comparable to investing in startups), hedge fund strategies (focused on returns), index investing (smart beta), yield-generating strategies, and traditional investments (like ETFs or direct asset holdings).

  • Sygnum serves a growing niche clientele, including crypto-native treasuries and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). The due diligence for these entities is complex, and Sygnum plays a crucial role in connecting the traditional financial world with the crypto world while also strictly adhering to regulatory frameworks.

  • Sygnum's core strength lies in its combination of blockchain technology, financial products and fully regulated services, along with its focus on educating crypto-savvy clients about the benefits of traditional finance and offering options to access both worlds through a single portfolio.

Tokenization: Another Catalyst for Change

  • While the adoption of tokenization has been slower than anticipated, Sygnum believes it has the potential to revolutionize asset ownership and liquidity. For example, tokenizing real-world assets like money market funds, or the collaboration between Blackrock and Circle to tokenize money market funds, are significant examples.

However, tokenizing art assets, like Picasso paintings, is still in its early stages and has not yet occurred on a larger scale. Growth in this area is expected to be slower due to the limited number of entities capable of legally handling securities.

The Future of Sygnum

  • Sygnum's success hinges on its ability to bridge the gap between blockchain technology and traditional financial services. With a focus on trust, compliance and innovation, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing institutional interest in digital assets.

  • As regulatory clarity improves and infrastructure continues to develop, Sygnum anticipates increased adoption of cryptocurrencies by institutional investors. The company's commitment to providing a secure and regulated platform will be key in shaping the future of finance.
