Associate, Venture Capital (Tech Focus)
Job Summary:
Associate, Venture Capital (Tech Focus) works alongside the investment team across the full investment cycle, with an emphasis on hands-on technical due diligence. Partnering closely with senior investors, the Associate sources and screens startups, runs the technical evaluations that feed the team's investment committee decisions, validates product and benchmark claims, and supports portfolio monitoring. The focus is AI, where this role carries the technical diligence; because SCB 10X also invests in blockchain and web3, exposure to those areas is a strong plus rather than a requirement. The role is built for someone who can turn a vendor's demo and documentation into a defensible technical assessment the whole team can rely on.
Job Descriptions:
- Working with the investment team to source and screen AI startups, and selectively blockchain and web3 startups, into the investment pipeline, applying a structured framework that separates durable products from thin wrappers built on rented AI models.
- Running the hands-on technical due diligence that feeds the investment team's decisions: standing up vendor SDKs and reproducible test environments, reproducing product demonstrations under realistic conditions, and tracing claimed results back to primary evidence.
- Verifying vendor performance and benchmark claims so the team can rely on the numbers: designing neutral re-tests with an independent judge, pinned models, and fair baselines, acquiring public evaluation datasets, computing the metrics that matter such as accuracy, recall, and latency percentiles, and flagging self-grading or cherry-picked comparisons.
- Building competitive comparison matrices that evaluate a target against its direct alternatives on capability, architecture, data ownership, integration depth, switching cost, and total cost of ownership, and flagging where a vendor's documentation goes quiet.
- Reading and summarizing technical documentation, model and product specifications, and peer-reviewed or industry research to help the team assess whether a company's technical moat is real.
- Partnering with senior investors to prepare the technical sections of investment committee memos, including the evidence and methodology, the open risks, and the questions that remain unanswered after diligence.
- Conducting market research on specific AI sub-domains, and on blockchain and web3 where relevant, to proactively identify trends and investment opportunities, and supporting financial modeling, valuation, and cost-of-ownership analysis.
- Supporting the investment team in monitoring and reporting on portfolio companies, tracking the operating and product metrics that signal whether an investment thesis is holding.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Math, or a related quantitative or engineering field.
- At least 2 to 3 years of work experience in technology startups, venture capital, technical consulting, or a hands-on engineering or data role.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate AI and enterprise-technology products on their merits: able to run a product hands-on, stand up a benchmark or test, and verify a vendor's claims rather than take them at face value.
- Python fluency and comfort with reproducible workflows, including managing environments, SDKs, and APIs and logging exact versions and configurations so that a third party can replicate a result.
- Working fluency with AI-native tools and the modern AI product stack, for example coding assistants and LLM applications, including the difference between a rented model, a wrapper, and an owned workflow, enough to judge what a company actually owns.
- Strong understanding of technical and business concepts, including corporate finance, operating metrics, retention, and unit economics, with the business acumen to connect them.
- Strong interest and knowledge in startups and technology, with a primary focus on AI and AI-native applications; familiarity with blockchain, web3, and digital assets, areas SCB 10X also invests in, is a strong plus.
- Fluent in English with strong writing, communication, and presentation skills, able to work closely with an investment team and turn technical findings into clear memos for non-technical decision-makers.
- A skeptical but fair mindset, comfortable reading a sparse vendor document and inferring the real architecture behind it.
